How to Mount a Staghorn Fern

Megan and I picked up two Staghorn ferns from the Half Moon Bay Nursery. I found some wood that drifted up to the beach. Tonight, we now have to Staghorn Ferns that hang on the wall.

Couple steps how to do it. 1) Get wood and Staghorn fern. 2) staple some mesh to the board. 3) stuff pre-soaked sphagnum moss between board and mesh.

4) rinse as much dirt of the fern, prune roots as necessary.

5) cut hole in mesh where the fern will go. 6) insert into hole and stitch up. 7) you are done.

  1. Oh my gosh, It’s that easy, huh? I love it. And we will have to give it a try.
The staghorns always intrigue me, but I haven’t tried growing them. Now, you have got me interested. Thanks for sharing.

  2. This is wonderful! I wish I’d had this when I mounted mine.

  3. Where do you get the mesh???

    • Hi Cora, I started out using a mesh that I picked up at the fabric store, but now I just use nails and fishing line. Plastic bird mesh and staples would work great too. BTW, we will be doing a demo at my work tho month at Flora Grubb if in SF.
