Exactly one year ago today I posted about my beloved pineapple plant. When we first moved to San Francisco funds were pretty tight. I’d read about growing a pineapple via You Grow Girl so we bought a nice looking pineapple (native to Paraguay and Brazil) at the market, ate it and saved the top. I peeled off the bottom leaves, let it dry out for about a week or so then stuck it in dirt. Two and a half years later we have a gigantic pineapple (Ananas comosus) plant. It’s the only bromeliad fruit cultivated on a large scale.
A few days ago we found that ants started a party under it, so it needed to go outside. I’m guessing it’s about six feet wide. We’ll see how it goes outdoors. The coastal SF weather is not ideal, but it’s just too huge to keep inside anymore. Hopefully it will do alright outside. I’ve given up hope on it ever flowering, but it was a fun experiment.
