What's Up Mushrooms?

Taking a peek at the garden, I stumbled across three mushrooms standing proudly in the Irish Moss (Subgina subulata).  As I often ask, “What’s up Mushrooms…are you friend or foe?”

I have always thought of them as a sign of good soil health.  Besides the fact that our dog may try to eat them…are they really a bad sign?

Aerial shoot of the three suspects.  I am not surprised they popped up here.  I understand they like dark and damp places…and this is the shadiest side of our garden.

I have left them for now next to our Cow Carrying Surfboard from Cow Parade.  The two make a perfect match.

  1. Good lord they are huge! It’s been the same here this spring, they are everywhere…and types I’ve never seen before. I like them but like you I am worried that the dog might eat them and then be ill, or worse. So I pull them up.

  2. A mushroom is the fruit of the mycelium! It means your soil is healthy!

  3. I find mushrooms fascinating and magical, but my grandmother’s dog very nearly died from ingesting them. Don’t think they’re worth it with pets or kids around…

  4. So the mushrooms are coming out so that they do not get eaten by the dogs…but looks like the soil is good in that area. yeah!

  5. Good to know. I often get a bit worried when I have mushrooms growing… Yours are pretty btw!

  6. The strangest mushrooms I’ve had were on a couple of eucalpytus. Seems their name is Laetiporus gilbertsonii and are possibly edible. I always assumed they had something to do with the trees’ death, but apparently not. http://www.mykoweb.com/CAF/species/Laetiporus_gilbertsonii.html
