This past weekend we headed to a part of town we rarely frequent, Fisherman’s Wharf. After a quick stop at the Ferry Building to load up on an assortment of free samples at the Farmers’ Market we headed down to Pier 39 to check out the Tulipmania. Warning there is nothing very “Far Out” in this post, but we saw lots and lots of tulips, spring bloomers & tourists.
Hooray for Icelandic poppies (Papaver nudicaule), too!
They planted parsley to fill in some of the beds, which looked fabulous.
Through the twitter world we found out that Denise Dirickson has been the gardener at Pier 39 for thirty five years! She rocks it. Check out my blog post from last year’s summer bloomfest at the wharf here. I have to admit I was a little shocked at how awesome the gardens were. If you find yourself in Fisherman’s Wharf make sure you don’t miss out on the coolest thing there, the Musee Mechanique. Here’s the link to all our pics from Tulipmania on flickr.

Thanks for this. It’s stunning for one, and makes Pier 39 a place for even locals to visit. Best of all is hearing that Denise, who I attended horticulture classes with 30 years ago at CSM, is still maintaining it. It was brand new then. Bravo Denise! And Bravo to you two. You have one of the best garden blogs focused on The City.

Hey, thanks Trey. The city is one gorgeous place and we enjoy our urban hikes which most always seems to be plant focused. Matti

I really need to go to the Netherlands during bulb season some year. I do love me some tulips. Not enough to want to plant them in California but they are lovely.

OMG I was there with my husband and our bff’s on Sunday! I took tons of pics of the tulips too! How weird! Too bad we didn’t meet up! Darn! Your pics are super!

I’ve been noticing the tulips, too! They must be happy each year, now that SF is getting colder & colder in the winter and spring.
M&M – have you guys heard of the SF Cheese School? Matt and I went last night to cheese and lager school… so fabulous! You have to try it!

You would think after waking up the past couple of days that our Zoe has changed. Wow
Yes…cheese school. I think I came across it. Don’t they have classes around Ft Mason? I def want to make me some cheese. It’s the Sconnie in me. Matti

Your pics are fabulous! I was at the Legion of Honor that day for an Ancient Arts Council talk. I really wanted to hit up the orchid fest but didn’t make it.
My favorites are the Iceland Poppies. I get so many bees in my patio/roof because of their large bright flowers.
Will yo be attending the SF Garden Show?
Also I’ll be volunteering at the Spring Garden Market show at the CNGF booth. Have you ever been to this event?

Thanks! I’m loving the Icelandic Poppies all over the place, too! My favorites are the orangey ones. Not sure if we’ll be going to the SF Garden Show this year. Maybe. Great blog!

Ah, lovely! I was in Amsterdam this past September and missed out on the tulips. Now that they are in season, I so want to go back. Your pictures are giving me major wanderlust. — Michelle
