Scabiosa & West Coast Lady

Scabiosa & West Coast Lady

Happy Garden Bloggers’ Bloom Day! A big shout out to May Dreams Garden for hosting the worldwide flower sharing fest. Lots of repeats from recent months past, but we still have plenty o’flowery action happening out back. We’re not really sure which Scabiosa this is (it was a mystery freebie from Annie’s I planted in a pot last winter). The dang thing hasn’t stopped blooming since May and the butterflies love it. I love how the little periwinkle dots on the wings match the bloom.

Brugmansia sanguinea

Brugmansia sanguinea

Our Brugmansia sanguinea has busting out the blooms left and right. We’ve actually had a decent amount of rain for October, which nearly collapsed the entire thing (I feel like a pruning failure). It’s super floppy… which means as soon as the flower fest is done I’m going to hack it back. Anyone have any advice about pruning it in to a lovely small tree?

Echeveria sp.

Echeveria gibbiflora

Not really sure what this cultivar is, but it’s an Echeveria gibbiflora of some sort. I’m going to call it ‘Fancy Panties’ since I have no idea what cultivar it really and truly is.

Euphorbia myrsinites

Euphorbia myrsinites

Now I haven’t really looked at a donkey tail lately, but what’s up with the common name “Donkey Tail Spurge”? Nothing about this plant reminds me of an equine creature, but I do love it.

Calandrinia spectabilis

Calandrinia spectabilis

Look at that lovely flower! The actual plant itself is all spotty and weird. I’m thinking it’s getting too much water, not enough sun and is in a pot with probably sub-standard (crappy recycled so-so draining soil). We have a couple in the ground that have never been that happy either (they more sun and less water). I see them everywhere around town (even in the fog belt) looking huge and awesome. Perhaps we have the Calandrinia curse?

Petunia exerta

Petunia exserta

I’m still loving our Petunia exserta (almost extinct in its homeland of southeastern Brazil). When we look out over the garden from the living room, the flowers look like floating red stars. I dead head it religiously.

Black Petunia

Black Petunia

My fingers turn purple when I deadhead this one. I’m curious to see how things go for it this winter.

Grill looking pretty

Grill looking pretty

We flipped the grill around a week or two ago, since the Lotus maculatus was putting on a show for the fence. Echeveria pulvinata is back in action again, too. Anyone else out there orange flower fans? I think we need more orange flowering friends.

Fuchsia fulgens

Fuchsia fulgens

Still looking good despite my half-assed transplant.

Dahlia ‘Dark Side of the Sun’

Dahlia ‘Dark Side of the Sun’

Oh geez, I just looked at our previous Bloom Day posts and back in August I posted almost this exact same picture. I’ll be honest. We almost spaced Bloom Day, so some of these pictures are a week or two, maybe three old. Right this very second there are no Dahlia blooms in action.

Fuchsia 'Fanfare'

Fuchsia 'Fanfare'

Are you sick of ‘Fanfare’ yet? It just keeps blooming and blooming and blooming.

Cuphea 'Strybing Sunset'

So does Cuphea ‘Strybing Sunset’.

Holy Hipstamatic Garden

Fuchsia 'Fanfare' & Friends

A couple weeks ago I went a little crazy with the Hipstamatic app combined with the AutoStitch app out back. Matti’s the king of this technique, since I’m often bogarding the DSLR.  I’m loving the trippy pics this combo produces. It’s super easy, too! Makes the garden look all magical & stuff.

June Blooms

Calceolaria integrifolia 'Kentish Hero'

Happy June Garden Bloggers’ Bloom Day! We’ve never had so many bloomiferous happenings out back before. A big shout out to Annie’s Annuals for offering a plant employee discount so generous I’ve tried out TONS of plants I never would have given a shot. My current fave that’s covered in buds and blooms is Calceolaria integrifolia ‘Kentish Hero’. How can you not love the freaky lip like orange blooms? I apologize in advance for the mass quantities of flower pictures.

Papaver commutatum 'Ladybird'

This is my first year growing Papavers. My favorite is hands down Papaver commutatum ‘Ladybird’. I’m sad to report that our Papaver ‘Greek‘ died an early death due to a gopher incident we’d like to forget, but it was pretty for the few weeks we had with it. This one’s safe and sound in a container.

Papaver 'Drama Queen'

Named appropriately, Papaver ‘Drama Queen’ almost got eaten by the gopher, too! I definitely would have staked this puppy if I knew how big and floppy it was going to be. The gopher action right next to it didn’t help the situation, along with the RAIN IN JUNE. I think I’m going to replace it with Dahlias this weekend. It’s squashing stuff.

Bulbine bloom

Gosh darn it. I forget which one this is. Love that it has peachy orange blooms.

Delphinium belladonna 'Bellamosum'

I was curious to see if Delphinium belladonna ‘Bellamosum’ could hack it in the cold, windy, foggy Outer Sunset. It went a wee bit sideways, but still pretty.

Fuchsia 'Fanfare'

The fuchsias are all freaking out, but ‘Fanfare’ is freaking out with wild abandon. It’s kind of out of control. Most of the canes are at least ten feet tall flopping all over the place. If I had carefully read the description I would have seen, “I have seen it espaliered to fill up the entire side of a house”.  Wholly crap! I’ve been chopping it back a little to promote some bushiness. Maybe it’s just going through it’s gawky stage?

Fuchsia Mystery

Here’s the mystery fuchsia. It’s been looking kind of sick (yellow leaves), but still busting out flowers. My best guess is that it’s getting sunburned. In the winter this side of the yard gets almost no direct light. The blue stuff is a Cerinthe major purpurascens seedling we let stick around.

Scyphanthus elegans

Scyphanthus elegans is a cute little vine from Chile. I planted Eccremocarpus scaber ‘Cherry Red’ next to it and they’re just starting to play with each other. I just realized they’re both Chilean. We have TONS of Eccremocarpus scaber ‘Tresco Gold’ from reseeding action on our shady side. It’s one of my favorite plants. The hummingbirds go crazy.

Clarkia concinna

Clarkia concinna gives the native section a little splash o’ pink. The native middle section continues to rock.

Poppy Attack!

Caterpillars have been having a ball with the California poppy blooms. This weekend I watched as flocks of little birds came in and went to town on the little flower eaters.

Camissonia cheiranthifolia

Still loving California native Camissonia cheiranthifolia. The flower action never ends. I’m going to shut up now, and post more pictures since it’s getting late.

Lathyrus odoratus 'Barry Dare' & Friends

Nemophila menziesii 'Penny Black' with cresting Graptopetalum

Phygelius capensis ‘Magenta’

Echium plantagineum with Scabiosa & friends

Cestrum newellii

Anchusa capensis 'Blue Angel'

Check out May Dreams Gardens for blooms all over the world. Happy Bloom Day!

May Bloom Day Merriment

Viola Village

Hurray for May Bloom Day! Thanks to May Dreams Gardens for hosting Garden Bloggers’ Bloom Day! Our backyard is the bloomiest it’s EVER been. People at work have said I’ve crossed over to “Flower Floozy” land, and I think they might be right even though I keep denying it. This container is full of Viola ‘Tiger Eyes’, Viola nigra ‘Bowles Black’, Viola ‘Etain’ with Satureja douglasii (Yerba Buena) creeping around. There’s some Aeoniums hanging out, too.

Echium wildpretii continues to rock!

Container experiment

This is our blue/orange container I planted back in early April. I’m liking it so far. There’s a bumble bee checking out Linaria reticulata
‘Flamenco’
. I’m hooked on the Cerinthe retorta and Cheiranthus x allionii.
