Pfeiffer, Plants and Beaches

Big Sur - over looking the Bixby Bridge

Big Sur - over looking the Bixby Bridge

One of coolest drives you can take is Highway 1. Our favorite stretch is from Carmel by the Sea down to Big Sur. Every mile you want to pull the car over and stand in awe. For miles you can witness the Pacific Ocean splashing against the rocky cliffs, little pockets of cool plants and beaches which you never seem to be able to touch.

Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park Waterfall

Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park McWay Waterfall

About 38 miles south of Carmel by the Sea, you will stumble upon Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park. If you are lucky enough, you may see McWay Waterfall in action. I say lucky, because the falls can dry up during parts of the year. It’s an easy hike to the falls and always some flowers and foliage worth checking out.

Baccharis pilularis - Coyote Brush

Baccharis pilularis - Coyote Brush

I admire the integrity of the Coyote Brush (Baccharis pilularis). It tolerates harsh, salty winds and long drought summers. Most of the year it usually looks like it’s on the verge of death. Late fall into the winter, it flushes out a delicate display yellow and fluffy white flowers. There’s a dwarfy Bay Area native called Baccharis pilularis Twin Peaks that I want to bring home.

Hesperoyucca whipplei - Our Lord's Candle

Hesperoyucca whipplei - Our Lord's Candle

Megan was the first to spot these guys chilling along the rocky face. Hesperoyucca whipplei (syn. Yucca whipplei) goes by many names including Our Lord’s Candle and Spanish Bayonet. The common names are describing the 3-10 foot flower spike with a densely branched inflorescence (not seen here).

NOID - maybe Malacothrix saxatilis ?

NOID - maybe Malacothrix saxatilis ?

We believe that this NOID is Malacothrix saxatilis. Anybody have thoughts or a better guess?

Epilobium canum (synonym Zauschneria californica) - California Fuchsia

Epilobium canum (synonym Zauschneria californica) - California Fuchsia

The California Fuchsia (Epilobium canum) was putting on quite the show along the cliffs. Hummingbirds really dig this plant, and we spotted it many spots along our trek.

The McWay Waterfall is one of those many beaches along Hwy 1 that you can never reach because of steep cliffs. However, there is one beach that you can reach and we always visit. It’s 8 miles north of the McWay Falls (or 30 miles south of Carmel by the Sea)…

Pfeiffer Beach Big Sur

Pfeiffer Beach Big Sur

It’s called Pfeiffer Beach in Big Sur…and it can be a real challenge to find. You need to look for a sharp turn that leads to a one-lane road called Sycamore Rd. At the end, you will find a $5 toll booth and a beach that does not disappoint the senses. Oh bonus, it’s semi dog friendly too. I say semi because I believe it’s on leash only, but many dogs run free after you get to the north end of the beach.

Abronia latifolia - Coastal Sand Verbena

Abronia latifolia - Coastal Sand Verbena

Here’s a new old friend that we see a lot along the coast…Abronia latifolia (Coastal Verbena). It’s a cute little salty succulent. While Max the Border Collie stretches his legs, and Megan takes a bunch of pics….Matti loves too balance rocks.

Yes, it is a little known fact that I love rock stacking.

Big Sur Spirit Garden

Big Sur Spirit Garden

In Big Sur and still need more plant action? We highly recommend these two of our favorites, Big Sur Spirit Garden and Nepenthe. The Spirit Garden is this funky little watering hole that has a whole lot of charm, while Nepenthe will let you fill your more sophisticated needs. Either way, their plants are worth a stop. Anybody have other Big Sur or Hwy 1 plant stop favs? Would love to hear about them.

Whale of a Story

Grass is Greener.

Grass is Greener.

There’s a guy up in Westport, CA who’s on a mission to build a giant whale in his front yard. While up in Mendocino last month, we journeyed 25 miles further north on Hwy 1 to see how his progress is coming along.

Westport Whale.

Local artist, Carlos Amigos (aka Kyle Siler), is the man behind this cool project. This roadside attraction measures somewhere in the neighborhood of 50 feet long, 10 feet high. Seems to be more of a rebar and mesh sculpture at the moment, but believe he’s gonna be coated with fiberglass in the end. Check out his blog on more of the story.

Echeveria imbricata

Echeveria imbricata

While there, it wouldn’t be right if we didn’t stroll around to check out some of the gardens in the hood. Love these Echeveria imbricara. They grow into there tight concentric patches that are mesmerizing to the eye.

Neighbor's place.

This garden is chock full of color and texture. If you take a closer look, just up to the right, you can see the afternoon fog rolling in. Even though summers are dry here, that fog drip helps keep our coastal plants hydrated.

Westort Whale.

So I was convinced that a lot of progress has been made on this whale project. Looking back to last Thanksgiving when we originally saw this beast…it looks about the same as before, lol. Still an impressive sight nonetheless and worth checking out if you’re anywhere near this small town of 200.

We can’t wait for out next trek north. Any suggestions for other offbeat objects or gardens we need to go see?

Coastal Roadside Detour

No highheals please.

No highheals please (on the beach?)

OMGosh, it’s Memorial Day Weekend.  We’re staycationing this holiday, but really getting the itch to do a little road trip soon.  Until then, we need to wet our appetite with a rewinding to some roadside fun from our last romp down south.

Giant Rodeo Hat - Salinas, California

Giant Rodeo Hat - Salinas, California

Just about two hours after leaving San Francisco, we saw the Salinas CA town sign.  It felt like we just got on the road, but decided to make that unexpected right hand turn completely out of our way. We heard about the biggest cowboy hats…how giant can they be?  Well, larger than a breadbox and smaller than a Mini Bus.

Bubble Gum Alley, San Luis Obispo

Bubble Gum Alley, San Luis Obispo

Bubble Gum Alley is disgustingly sweet.  When you get on the main drag in SLO, you really have the jerk your head fast to see it.  Fortunately, we were traveling on a holiday (and over winter break for the college), so plenty of parking.  Yes, gum is stuck to the walls floor to about as high as a 10 foot latter will allow.  Curious Places has some great pics on the place.

Hendry's Dog Beach

Stacked stones - Hendry's Dog Beach, aka Arroyo Burro Beach, Santa Barbara

Santa Barbara was our first pit stop in our adventure.  We’ve already blogged the pants off of Santa Barbara such as our <3 for Dudleyas.  We found this great dog friendly beach called Hendry’s Dog Beach.  Plenty of sand and waves for you and your dog to burn off a little energy.  It’s out there a ways, and worth it.  Bytemaps goes into location and details.

Shark on Stearns Wharf, Santa Barbara

Shark on Stearns Wharf, Santa Barbara

Ah, the Stearns Wharf is okay…kinda of what you expect where main drag meets ocean.

Flowering Aloe Spikes.

Flowering Aloe Spikes.

But there were Aloe Blooms all over the place.  Yeah, don’t try to find them this weekend…they should be all spent by now.

Harrison Ford's Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Harrison Ford's Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Next stop, Hollywood.  If you like cheesy head down to Grauman’s Chinese Theatre and be a good tourist.  I screamed every couple feet, “Megan Look!  (insert famous celebrity star’s name here)!”

Bob Hope's hands and footprints at the Grauman's Chinese Theatre.

Check out our Flickr to see who Megan and Matti picked to stand in their shoes.

All wigs.

All wigs.

So many wigs, so little time.

Runyon Canyon Dog Park in the Hollywood Hills.

Runyon Canyon Dog Park in the Hollywood Hills.

Another great Dog Friendly find, Runyon Canyon Dog Park.  Located in the Hollywood Hills, you can see the whole enchilada here, Hollywood sign (not on same hill), the backyards of the famous, & Downtown LA to the Pacific Ocean.  I can’t say for certain, but think I saw a celeb in big dark sunglasses on our hike.

Santa Monica Pier

Santa Monica Pier

Nothing like hanging out on Santa Monica Pier at sunset, picturesque.  Save enough time to get on the Ferris Wheel.  We didn’t and missed the ride.  Oops, something to look forward to next time.  Speaking of Santa Monica, Plant Propaganda has experience gardening there…it looks heavenly.

Hearst Castle

Hearst Castle

On the backside of our trip, we had to check out Hearst Castle.  Pre-2010, I had Zero % interest seeing this place.  Long story short, spent New Year Day 2010 in dog friendly Cayucos, CA…just 30 mins from the Castle.

We are this close..may as well see it right?  Holy Crap, it was awesome.  Now we visit anytime we are in the area…rain or shine.  Yeah, it was a moody that day at the castle…still great time was had by all.

So where were going?  We want to do a mini road trip in June, and a longer one in Aug (good time to get away from SF fog).  Any suggestions?

Westport Whale Sculpture

We’re going off topic today, but can’t resist sharing this (soon to be) road side attraction.  Outsider Artist, Carlos Amigos aka Kyle Siler, is building a ginormous whale sculpture in the little coastal town of Westport California…just along Highway 1. … Continue reading
